Christmas Storm Thoughts

This is my first official forecast for the Christmas Storm. Forecast will likely change over the next 48 hours and could do so drastically depending on the model trends. View With Caution.

Getting Colder Today

This morning is warmer than it will be at the end of the day. We will have a great deal of clouds around today and temperatures will fall throughout the day into the upper 30's later this afternoon. Thursday will be cool but clear. Highs will climb to around 45 degrees with lows dipping into the upper 20's.
Well everyone seems to be excited and wondering about the Christmas System. At this time, models are beginning to come better aligned and I am becoming more confident in an accumulating snowfall for the Christmas Holiday. I will hold off from shouting any snow totals right now, but that may not be too far off as this approaching winter storm is gaining confidence this morning.

First Look At Christmas Forecast

A developing low pressure system later this week could bring rain followed by a wintry mix late Christmas Eve before changing over to snow on Christmas Day. This is still several days away, but there is potential of accumulating snowfall across the midwest, southeast, and mid atlantic as we head into the holiday weekend. Please stay tuned throughout the week for the very latest forecast.

Snow on Christmas?

National Weather Service Nashville:
...POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR FIRST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL ON CHRISTMAS IN
17 YEARS...

THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY NINE CHRISTMASES WITH MEASURABLE AMOUNTS OF
SNOW SINCE SNOWFALL RECORD KEEPING BEGAN IN NASHVILLE BACK IN THE
WINTER OF 1884 AND 1885. THE LAST TIME MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON
CHRISTMAS DAY IN NASHVILLE WAS IN 1993 WHEN THREE TENTHS OF AN
INCH WAS MEASURED. TRACE AMOUNTS OF SNOW FELL ON CHRISTMAS IN
2002. STATISTICALLY THERE IS ONLY A 7 PERCENT CHANCE OF MEASURABLE
SNOW ON ANY GIVEN CHRISTMAS. THE MOST SNOW EVER TO FALL ON
CHRISTMAS IN NASHVILLE IS 2.7 INCHES IN 1969.

A MAJOR STORM SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES
AND WILL MOVE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES ON THURSDAY AND INTO THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS THURSDAY NIGHT. DURING THE DAY FRIDAY THE SYSTEM
WILL MOVE FROM EAST TEXAS INTO LOUISIANA...SPREADING WINTRY PRECIPITATION
ACROSS THE MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY WITH RAIN ACROSS THE LOWER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. AS THE SURFACE SYSTEM MOVES NORTHEAST INTO
ALABAMA AND NORTH GEORGIA CHRISTMAS EVE NIGHT...COLDER AIR GETS
DRAWN IN BEHIND THE SURFACE SYSTEM...WITH SNOW IS EXPECTED TO
DEVELOP ACROSS MIDDLE TENNESSEE CHRISTMAS EVE AND CONTINUE INTO
CHRISTMAS DAY. CLIMATOLOGICALLY...THIS IS A FAVORED TRACK FOR SNOW
IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE...BUT SINCE THIS EVENT IS SEVERAL DAYS
AWAY...UNCERTAINITY STILL REMAINS IN THE EVENTUAL TRACK OF THE
STORM SYSTEM AND SNOW AMOUNTS.

Winter Weather To Visit Southern Tennessee

Well here we go...our first winter weather event of the season. Over the next three days we will be dealing with moderate rain, light snow, and bitter arctic cold with possible wind chills dipping to near zero. It is going to be a blustery winter weekend. Lets break it down into more specifics.

Latest Weather Advisories

Today: Clouds have already set in across the area. Later today, we will see rain overspread the area. Some of the rain could be moderate to heavy at times. Most of the rainfall today will come after noon. High temperatures today will be in the mid 50's.

Tonight: Tonight is when the fun will begin around here. Rain showers will continue before transitioning over to all snow sometime after midnight. The bulk of the moisture will be exiting the area as the cold air enters the Tennessee Valley. However, I do believe that we will see a brief burst of moderate snowfall on the back edge of the precipitation that could put down a quick dusting of snowfall. Regardless, with roadways wet and temperatures dropping sharply and quickly well below freezing, driving will become difficult after midnight tonight. The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area due to this risk.

Sunday: Sunday will feature continued on and off snow showers and post frontal moisture wraps around the low pressure system. Snow will generally be light to moderate. Some area's of middle Tennessee could receive several inches of snowfall. Here in southern middle Tennessee I believe we will see some minor accumulations for those areas along Interstate 40. Check out the latest snow accumulation map under the Winter Center Tab. Do not expect highs on Sunday to rise above freezing. This will prolong the threat of dangerous roadways and again the NWS has posted a WWA to handle these issues. Low to mid teens can be expected for low temperatures on Sunday night. Winds will also be quite strong Sunday night possibly leading to wind chills that will meet advisory criteria.

Monday: The snow showers will clear out to the east on Monday but the cold will remain across our area with high temperatures struggling to make it into the mid 20's. Lows will again dip well into the lower teens.

Tuesday: Highs will remain below freezing but dry conditions.

I will continue to update snow accumulation map as well as forecast as needed this weekend. Please be careful if you have to travel this weekend.

Warmer Today, Still Chilly

We will see high temperatures today soar into the middle 40's!! :) Seriously, some pretty chilly weather is still in place across the Southern Tennessee area today. Dry weather is around until the weekend when we will see rain/snow. Look out for more updates today about this weekends system.

Weekend System

Well after watching this storm system slowly come into better view things are starting to become a little clearer this afternoon. First off...this system is still several days away so many things could happen between now and Sunday causing a drastic change in forecast. Secondly, there is potential for accumulating winter precipitation across southern Tennessee for Sunday through Monday. Though totals will likely be on the light side, this will be our first winter weather event of the year other than passing flurries earlier this week.

Again, this system will need to be monitored closely but do not expect a monster snow storm at this time. More updates as we get closer to the weekend.

Cold Weather Continues

Chilly With Flurries

It is quite cold outside today with a few flurries flying occasionally. Those should taper off later this afternoon into this evening. The week ahead is mainly dry with chilly weather. Temperatures will remain in the 30's for daytime highs most of this week. A slight warming trend is expected towards the end of the week with our next major weather system due in here sometime next weekend. Details are still murky on that system but it looks like rain showers, possibly mixed with snow at times. Something to keep an eye out for. Have a great Sunday!

Rainy Turkey Day Turns Chilly

Forecast Discussion
Southern Tennessee
November 25, 2010

Currently: As of 6pm a line of heavier rain and isolated thunder associated with a cold front is stretched along a line from Macon County, TN to Williamson County, TN to Wayne County, TN. Some gusty winds upwards of 30mph could also accompany this line of showers. I believe the severe weather threat has diminished for tonight. A wintry mix is located out west from southern Missouri to central Illinois. 30 Degrees in Springfield, Mo, 50 Degrees in Memphis, TN and 70 Degrees in Nashville, TN. As one can note, a drastic shift in temperatures will occur over the next 12 hours. Lows tomorrow morning will br around the freezing mark. As the colder air filters into middle Tennessee later tonight there is a slight chance that the ending showers could mix with a few sleet pellets. No accumulation is expected and this should not cause any travel concerns as of right now.

Friday: What a chilly day it will be. Highs will struggle into the mid 40's. A stray snow flurry cannot be ruled out tomorrow morning but very unlikely. The weather should clear out later tomorrow afternoon but like stated before, very chilly conditions.

Saturday- Sunday: A sunny and clear weekend with highs in the low to mid 50's. Lows Saturday night will dip into the 30's and Sunday night into the 40's.

Monday-Tuesday: Storm system with a strong cold front will bring storms and heavy rain to the area for the start of the week. Very cold weather will move in behind this system. There is a possibility that some areas in northern middle Tennessee could see this system end as some light snow. Will not include for our area at this time however since temperatures will be slightly warmer and precip will be moving out rather quickly behind cold front.

Happy Thanksgiving

Strong Storm Moving This Way

A severe storm capable of producing a tornado is now located in Hardin County, Tennessee. This storm bears watching as it moves toward Wayne County, Tennessee in our area. Stay tuned.

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Quick Look At Things

Scattered showers are pushing out of our area this afternoon. Things will stay relatively dry until tomorrow night when more rain and thunderstorms push into our. Some of the rain could be heavy at times. Much colder air arrives for black Friday. Highs on Friday will struggle to top 45 degrees. Bundle up shoppers. The weather clears out for the weekend with more showers and storms arriving early to mid next week.

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Evening Thoughts

Some patchy fog will develop overnight because of todays rain and storms. Lows will drop down to the lower 40's. A chance of thunderstorms tomorrow but even greater chance comes on Thanksgiving. Colder air rushes in on Thanksgiving night as the moisture pulls away and brings a very chilly start for Black Friday. Bundle up shoppers. Over the weekend, things clear out and temperatures moderate.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Rainy Start Today

Brief heavy rain is moving across the area this morning. Please allow enough time if headed out this morning and drive carefully.

Evening Thoughts

Gonna talk just for a minute about the upcoming week and what weather to expect. You can find the updated forecast for Southern Tennessee in the forecast tab at the top of the page as well as a holiday week breakdown graphically in the special forecast section.

Monday- Last dry day for a few days. Very warm.
Tuesday-Thanksgiving- Rain, some heavy at times. 1-2 inches when all is said and done. Drought reliever for some areas of Tennessee.
Thanksgiving Night-Friday Morning- Much colder air rushes into Middle Tennessee. A few snowflakes could mix in with the rain for areas along the northern Cumberland Plateau but do not believe we have to deal with any wintry weather from this system here in Southern Tennessee.
Long Range- Things will remain chilly as we enter early December and a few storms tracking through the east could cause some wintry tricks. This period will be one to be watched as far as any serious winter weather threats.

Warm Sunny Afternoon

What a beautiful Sunday it is. Mostly sunny conditions are present across the area with highs this afternoon expected to peak near 72 degrees. Even better, lows tonight will only drop into the low 50's. Tomorrow will bring another awesome day with highs climbing into the 70's. Some rain showers will be possible late tomorrow night and we start a week of rather unsettled weather. Rain and storms are possible for the holiday followed by much colder weather. Scroll down for a post concerning my holiday forecast. Have a wonderful Sunday!

Cold Weather Ahead

Check out the latest 8-14 day temperature departure from normal map! Yikes!! Some much colder weather looks to take hold of the east as we get past the Thanksgiving holiday. Enjoy the much warmer weather this early next week before winter sets in across the United States.

Holiday Weather Forecast

I will try to update this several times over the next several days to keep up an updated look at our upcoming holiday weather. It does look like some rainfall will be possible here in Tennessee for Thanksgiving. We will dry out however for Black Friday, but much colder weather will sweep into the area.

Southern Tennessee

Tonight: Rain will continue for a brief time this evening but is slowly drawing to a close. Expect breezy conditions as the low departs to our east. Temperatures cool off tonight into the 30's.

Wednesday-Friday: Highs typically in the upper 50's with lows in the low to mid 30's. Fairly dry weather across the area other than a few sprinkles possible late Wednesday.

Saturday-Tuesday: Highs generally in the 60's with nighttime lows dipping to the upper 30's/low 40's. Dry tranquil weather prevails for this time period.

Wednesday-Friday: Weather becomes a little more unsettled during this period with a rather powerful storm somewhere in the eastern two thirds of the US. Cold air will be poised to the north and will eventually pour into the south but may be slow at first. A possible winter storm could take shape for the northeast or mid atlantic states by late next week. Will be watching this storm for possible travel troubles concerning the Thanksgiving holiday.

Warmer Weather This Week

This week will bring warmer weather to the Southern Tennessee area. Highs this week will soar into the upper 60's and lower 70's. Lows at night will remain chilly dipping down into the lower 40's. The area will remain dry this week. The next chance of rain comes back around next weekend. Details on that exact system are still murky. The extended forecast looks rather chilly with the Climate Prediction Center calling for below normal temperatures in the long range.

Snow?!?

Seems that the weather forums are talking a little about some snow falling tonight. Well, the truth is, area's in eastern Tennessee along the mountains could pick up a little snow overnight. Places such as Gatlinburg could pick up a couple of inches of snow in the higher terrain. It will be plenty cold here in south central Tennessee but I do not believe we will be seeing any snow. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow of snow up in the mountains. Just another sign that winter is right around the corner.

Windy and Stormy Tuesday

A major storm system is taking shape across the entire United States. This system will bring very windy conditions outside of thunderstorm winds tomorrow. A wind advisory will go into effect tonight at midnight and run through tomorrow evening at 4pm. Folks need to secure outside items that may easily be blown about in the breezy conditions.

With all of the wind energy in the atmosphere it can only mean one thing. Something is going to blow through the area. Starting late morning into the early afternoon, storms will begin to enter our area. Some of those storms could be severe with the main threat being damaging winds. One thing that could be of concern would be the development of discrete supercells ahead of the squall line. This does not seem to be a major threat currently but will be something that must be monitored over the next 24 hours. Regardless, strong to severe storms will rock Southern Tennessee tomorrow and everyone needs to be on guard.

Finally Quieting Down

Taking a look at the latest radar, more rain and storms are to come through the early morning hours of today. I do believe however that most of the severe weather is done for this round of showers and storms. The weather will clear out later today and maybe even have some sunny skies later this afternoon. More storms will rumble into the area for Tuesday evening though and some of those storms could again be strong to severe. More updates on that round later today. Goodnight all! :)
